The Grammys: Forcing everyone to miss Downton Abbey

So I skipped a lot of TV shows in order to watch all 3.5 hours of The Grammys, plus the red carpet. I had to skip Once Upon A Time, The Walking Dead, The Real Housewives Of Atlanta, And Downton Abbey. I don’t do that for just any reason! So needless to say I was excited and hoping for a really good show.

Starting with the red carpet, I was annoyed at the beginning. I love Whitney Houston, her death was untimely, but I did NOT need Ryan Seacrest grilling everyone on the red carpet about the last time they saw Whitney. It was just awkward and I didn’t like it. With the evenings festivities starting that way I was worried that the whole night would be a somber and sad mess. But luckily, once Ryan was out of the picture the evening got off on a happier note!

Chris Brown performed(more about that on a later post) and people were less than happy. Katie Perry performed and it was alright. I’m biased cause I hate that bitch. No, not really. But I can’t say I’m a fan. I missed Beyonce being there, would have loved to see her perform but I understand why.  Oh yeah! How could I forget about Adele! I couldn’t have, that’s how. She was great. For a “comeback” performance it was perfect, but I expect nothing less from Adele to be honest. Rihanna and Coldplay performed and I enjoy both of them generally so I liked it enough. Not the most memorable performances but enjoyable. I wish Lady Gaga had performed, but then again when don’t I? I really was not feeling The Foo Fighters performances. I don’t know anything by The Foo Fighters though so, there’s the explanation why! The whole country segment was alright regardless of the fact that I don’t listen to country music. I’m in love with Blake Shelton, does that count? I actually really thought The Beach Boys segment was a lot of fun. Everyone knows at least one Beach Boys song, right?! Overall for the night I think the performances could have been more “A list,” if you know what I mean.

The show was incredibly long and I can’t remember if it usually lasts 3.5 hours but it somewhat dragged on. It felt as though after Jennifer Hudson sang the beautiful Whitney Houston tribute the show should have ended…but it didn’t. It kept going. By that point I was waning but I held out cause I had to see Best New Artist and Album Of The Year! I was happy for Adele but rooting for Gaga. And I was excited for Bon Iver…more excited than he was even! Oh yeah! Also saved for the very last minute was Nicki Minaj’s performance. And what a performance it was. Some kind of strange catholic exorcism thing. Her red carpet look was a bit underwhelming, which foreshadowed her performance. I’m no stranger to over the top theatrical performances. I love them! But this was a mess and awkward, just cause you knew people who didn’t get it were in shock.

So all in all I’d say it was a good show! Not the best grammy show I’ve seen but I’m not pissed that I missed Downton Abbey because of it! And that’s saying something!

P.S. No Etta James mention? At all? She was all anyone could talk about. Guess she was overshadowed.

Edit: Gameleste brought to my attention that Alicia Keys did the Etta James tribute at the beginning. I did forget but..let’s be honest,  Whitney was THE tribute people were waiting for. I will say, in my defense, I didn’t see Etta James AT ALL on that tribute video. Did I miss it? Was it there?
